Our Response to Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation's Decision to Defund Planned Parenthood

UPDATE:

Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation announced that they "will continue to fund existing grants, including those of Planned Parenthood, and preserve their eligibility to apply for future grants, while maintaining the ability of our affiliates to make funding decisions that meet the needs of their communities."

Our Statement:

WOMEN’S WAY is deeply disappointed by the recent actions of Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation. Defunding Planned Parenthood is clearly a decision based on political ideology and not sound health care policy for women. Planned Parenthood is a trusted provider of a wide array of reproductive health services and is often the only place women go for their health care needs, including preventive care and standard obgyn services. This awful decision has a disproportionately negative impact on low income women - the most vulnerable and marginalized among us. Breast cancer screenings are a critical part of breast cancer prevention and to deny this service to thousands of women based on pressure from anti-choice forces is unconscionable.  WOMEN’S WAY calls on Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation to swiftly reverse this decision and reinstate critical funding for a valued health care partner. If you agree, make your voice heard. Sign the petition at www.plannedparenthoodaction.org or call the Philadelphia Komen Affiliate at 215-238-8900 to voice your concerns.

WOMEN’S WAY has always been and will always be an advocate for quality reproductive healthcare, including abortion care. The war on women’s autonomy and healthcare access must end! It is based purely on politics and not on the best interests of women and their health needs. Sincerely,

Amanda S. Aronoff
