Malissa's Story

7/10/11

WOMEN'S WAY Grantee Why Not Prosper helps women in the Pennsylvania prison system discover their own strength by providing them with the support and resources that will empower them to become responsible, economically self-sufficient and contributing members of the community.

One recent Why Not Prosper graduate, Malissa demonstrated drive and perseverance both as a program participant and since her graduation. Malissa gives back to the Why Not Prosper programs by serving as a member of the Why Not Prosper board of directors. She has developed entrepreneurial skills by establishing of her own cleaning company and is committed to hiring female ex-offenders and paying them a minimum rate of $12/hour, assisting them in achieving financial stability and self-sufficiency.

In the spirit of empowerment and advocacy, Malissa has opened her own nonprofit organization called A Time Is Now For Change. She educates offenders in the Philadelphia prison system on their right to vote. While making it her mission to educate others, Malissa continues her own education, currently pursuing her Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services from LaSalle University.

Malissa’s story exemplifies the work and success of Why Not Prosper. As a result of receiving a second chance and having access to resources to aid her re-entry after her incarceration, Malissa has not only turned her own life around, but continues to inspire and provide hope to other females offenders every day.
