Human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery, and it happens right here in the greater Philadelphia region. Victims are tricked, lured, coerced, or otherwise removed from their home, and then exploited for commercial sex or labor purposes. Right now, human trafficking is the fastest growing crime in the world. It is a crisis taking place across the United States with traffickers exploiting both U.S. citizens and foreign nationals. Pennsylvania is not immune to this crime – it is happening all over our state, including in Philadelphia and surrounding counties.
Human Trafficking Harms Women and Girls
Worldwide, approximately 80% of human trafficking victims are women and girls. Perpetrators of human trafficking utilize power and control in a way that is similar to other forms of gender-based violence, such as domestic violence and abuse. (See the “Files” section below for a visual representation of power and control). We must act now to put an end to human trafficking and other egregious forms of gender-based violence.
