Celebrating 50 years of collective Action for gender equity

From our founding in 1976 to today, WOMEN’S WAY has played an integral part in Philadelphia's story and our nation’s history.

Fifty years ago, a group of visionary women came together around a bold idea: that by uniting under one banner, they could strengthen their collective voice and drive greater progress.

That idea gave rise to WOMEN’S WAY—the nation’s first umbrella women’s funding federation—and launched a legacy of leadership, community, and impact that continues to shape our region today. For half a century, we’ve inspired, mobilized, and connected organizations and individuals across generations to build collective power for gender equity.

This year, as we celebrate our 50th Anniversary alongside the nation’s 250th, we honor the critical role women and all gender-marginalized people have played and continue to play in shaping our region and pushing for a better future.

50TH aNNIVERSARY FUND

As part of our 50th Anniversary Celebration, the WOMEN’S WAY 50th Anniversary Fund launches the next evolution of our Young Women’s Initiative (YWI)—a philanthropic community dedicated to investing in the leadership, health, safety, and economic security of young women, girls, and gender-nonconforming individuals.

This Fund honors five decades of advancing gender equity while seeding the future by cultivating the next generation of philanthropists and leaders committed to gender equity. Contributions to the 50th Anniversary Fund will strengthen YWI members’ capacity to deepen impact and create a more just and equitable future where all young people have the opportunity to thrive.

Since her passing, I’ve been searching for a way to honor her legacy and the fight for gender equity, which was a lifelong goal — something she was striving for even up until the day she died. "I’ve always been passionate about gender justice, and I graduated with a double major in Gender Studies (then called Women’s Studies) and Sociology. In a twist of fate, my first job out of college was in finance. The conservative firm where I worked strongly “encouraged” employees to donate to its United Way campaign—and would match our contributions. I took particular pleasure in directing my gifts to reproductive justice organizations, knowing the firm would have to match donations that ran counter to its politics. It wasn’t until recently that I connected the dots that the Donor Choice option I used to direct my giving existed because of WOMEN’S WAY’s advocacy back in 1980—a full-circle moment linking my early values-aligned giving to the work I’m part of today." "I was accepted into the WOMEN’S WAY Change The Narrative Fellowship during my time at the Community College of Philadelphia (CCP). This fellowship was amazing in so many ways. I made connections with some wonderful women, and by listening to their stories, I learned a lot about perspectives I likely wouldn’t have been exposed to otherwise. I felt like I mentally grew so much, especially as a young woman surrounded by older, wiser women. Also, the monetary award that came with it is part of why I was able to go to Temple University without loans. It was incredibly helpful for me in saving up enough to go to Temple on my own dime.
